[...] Kate Says has posted the results of a survey on blocking of educational Web applications, like blogs, YouTube, social networking sites, etc. In a very impromptu survey of one class today, I asked, “how many of you were using the Internet for a legitimate school assignment this year and got blocked.” I was not surprised that all of the students said that they had.
Latest wrinkle in our district: letter from MS/HS principal saying that YouTube will be blocked "permanently" when we come back from Spring Break on the advice of the NYS Education Department and the NYS Police.

We are to use StudentTube or TeacherTube. Had class take a look at StudentTube today - they hated it! None of the music groups they want to hear, mainly Public Service Announcements & student-made videos. I know from experience that TeacherTube loads very slowly and doesn't have many of the educational videos I like to use.

Main benefit of both sites: filtered content. Welcome to our cell block.

[Problem re. instructional resources could be addressed if teachers had unblocking privileges, but the school is very reluctant to try this. If they don't trust us to use computers ethically, we shouldn't be working there, IMHO]

Interesting information in the spreadsheet. I always feel lucky that my district doesn't block many web applications at the high school level. It allows for teachers and students to be more creative in the delivery and receipt of information.
In some ways banned websites are today's version of banned books.
