I Scooped U.S. News & World Report (and why it doesn’t matter)

by Kate Olson on April 11, 2008

Please note these dates:

March 21, 2008 - I wrote the post This is IT - Why 2.0 about Aaron Strout of Mzinga hiring through social media

March 26, 2008 - Liz Wolgemuth of U.S. News and World Report wrote the article “The New Job Application: No Email or Resume” about Aaron Strout of Mzinga hiring through social media

March 28, 2008 - I wrote (with Stephanie Sandifer) another post about Aaron Strout and social media in relation to teaching purposeful networking

Did you catch that? I scooped US News & World Report! Does it matter? Nope, not a bit. In a world where there are estimated to be hundreds of millions of blogs (according to the Blog Herald) there is still a difference between “just a blog” and a news blog. The verdict?

U.S. News & World Report > Kate Says

Oh, and an update on Aaron Strout’s hiring saga -

UPDATED 4/10: I’ve now interviewed lots of really good candidates and am hoping to have a final decision on one of the positions soon. Also, I didn’t get a chance to post this earlier but US News and World Report picked up on this post.

Blog on, friends - writing “just a blog” is still writing………….and Aaron still rocks for doing a phone interview with me!

Congratulations on scooping US News and World Report. I always have mixed feelings when someone covers the same topic I do after me and gets more readers. On one hand it’s a compliment on the other hand it’s annoying.

Kate,

I believe I remember your first tentative tweets. Now you’re a mover and shaker!

Such a pleasure to know you.

Just wanted to clarify the “annoying comment” I made. I meant that as a general statement of how bloggers sometimes feel when the big guys copy their work.
Congratulations again on scooping US News and World Report.

Kate - you rock. And not only did you scoop US News but you were in part responsible for them picking up the story in the first place. Muchas gracias!!!

Best,
Aaron (@astrout)

diane » Hmmm, tentative is NOT a word usually used to describe me :-) As for movin’ and shakin’ I do my best!

Richard Byrne » Thanks for the understanding :-) I guess I more think it’s amusing that this happened as I don’t think of myself as influential in the news field and still find it amazing that people read my work!
