Blogging

Here Today, Gone Tomorrow

by Kate Olson on July 10, 2008

Right. So sometimes I get 15 deadlines all at once. With due dates of: YESTERDAY!!!!!!! We need this NOW!!!!!

And then I don’t blog for a few days.

This is going to be one of those times - just imagine me buried in a bunch of everything. If you feel like commiserating, I definitely have a few seconds to read your stories of shared insanity………

I’ll be back.

If you're new here (or just forgot last time!), you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

PollDaddy - Weigh In!

by Kate Olson on July 1, 2008

I started experimenting with PollDaddy polls over at This Mommy Gig (psssst - you can win a Starbucks gift card there, go check it out!) and LOVE the ability to embed the polls pretty much anywhere.

PollDaddy even has a WordPress plugin and I absolutely adore plugins - I collect them like treasures! This one allows you to simply enter a short poll number into your posts rather than a huge piece of HTML. The plugin can be found within PollDaddy when you create a poll. There are many different “skins” for your polls, but I found that I like the basic ones best, as the more elaborate ones tend to make the text difficult to read.

I created a poll and emebedded it here to show you the tool, but also truly would like your input - are you blogging less now that it’s summer? Take the poll and let me know! I mentioned on Twitter that I feel like I’m slacking (wait, do my multiple articles each day on SwimNetwork count as blogging?) and everyone reassured me that NO ONE is blogging as much now that it’s gorgeous outside and we’re out of hibernation.

Weigh in, please! Make me feel better about my less-than-prolific writing recently……….

Writing Elsewhere

by Kate Olson on June 24, 2008

Just a brief note to share some of my latest projects - I can’t seem to stick to writing on only one site!

1) I wrote a guest post on Tax Girl last week for their blog-off titled “$300,000 is Rich - Don’t Deny It!” where I give my oh-so-humble opinions on some political and societal tax news and views.

2) I’ll be writing for Savvy Auntie on education tips and tricks once this cool new site launches. The pieces will be focused on how aunts (and other relatives) can help the children around them succeed in school. You can sign up for the beta of Savvy Auntie now and be notified when the site launches.

3) SwimNetwork.com is my proud new home (well, one of them!) - I’m now one of their staff writers and will be writing as much as I possibly can on news and happenings in competitive swimming. This should get pretty exciting with the Olympic trials right around the corner and the Olympics in Beijing in August! My first piece is now up - if you’re a swim fan, or just intrigued by an entire networking site for swimmers, head on over and check it out!

4) This Mommy Gig gets a lot of my love and devotion as well, but you already knew that!

There are a few more things in the works, but I’ll save that excitement for another time. Right now I’m just happy that my writing is expanding and I’m able to turn this site into what I originally intended - a professional homepage acting as a portal to all of my work. I’ll definitely still be writing here, but as I expand my areas of interest, I’m happy to have niche sites to reach particular audiences. Oh yeah, and it’s summer and I don’t have daycare again until September! Time is precious, precious, precious.

Where in the world?

by Kate Olson on June 20, 2008

Cafe Du MondeRemember that computer game called “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?” That was the favorite activity of teachers when I was in middle school - the ONLY thing we ever did in the computer lab. Anyway, now it’s “Where in the World is Kate Olson?” and the game is SO easy - think cafe au lait, streetcars, beignets, nightlife, river, hot, and south.

I’ll be back on Monday!

Writers Wanted! Inquire Within………

by Kate Olson on June 16, 2008

WANTED! Writers!

A client of mine is looking for education bloggers (or those interested in starting to write about education) to contribute to a group blog. This is in the very beginning stages right now and we’re just getting a list of interested writers at this point. You would post regularly (but not be required to post more than 1x per month) about pretty much any topic related to education. We’re not looking for just edtech writers - seriously, ANYONE interested in writing about ANYTHING education-related is invited to add their name to the list of interested writers.

If you want a basic idea of what YOU would get out of the deal (nope, no money!) - here you go:

The perks are mainly exposure (you would have a bio and links back to your other sites) and the chance to write with a group of talented writers. It’s a learning community site and we hope it will inspire non-bloggers to enter the wonderful world of writing for an audience and responding to the work of others. A group blog is a great way for new bloggers to jump in to this world because it requires NO site maintenance - you get all the glory with none of the technical work - that’s a pretty good deal!

If you’d like a very general (and site-wise, very unrelated) look at what kind of bio you could have on the site, check out the contributors page on This Mommy Gig, a group blog that I started for parents.

If you’re interested:

Leave a comment here or email me at kolson29 at gmail dot com and let me know that you’re interested - a link to your current blog would be great, but if you don’t have one, that’s fine. It’s not an application, I’m not saying yay or nay - if you respond, you’re on the list. Simple as that!

As we’re just gathering names now, I’ll just get back to you to let you know I got your info and then get you more information as soon as things start rolling along.

I’m looking forward to hearing from a LOT of people - I would love if you could pass this along to your readers or Twitter friends, the more the merrier!
